The Experience
Your day starts at the circuit in Finland, where you check in with the team and collect your racing kit, including your overalls and helmet. Before heading anywhere near the track, you will sit down for a classroom briefing with the instructors. They talk you through the track layout, braking points and gear shifts so you understand how the cars behave at speed.
To get your eye in, you begin with a warm-up session driving a smaller single-seater, such as a Formula Renault or Formula 4 car. This gives you a chance to learn the lines and apexes of the circuit while building up your confidence behind the wheel. As you complete these practice laps, the instructors monitor your driving and give you practical feedback on your pace and technique.
Once you are warmed up, you move on to the main event: the Williams FW29. The instructors run through the specific controls and cockpit setup of the Grand Prix car so you know how the steering wheel and paddle-shift system work.
After getting strapped into the monocoque, the engine fires up and you are released onto the track for your four laps. As you head out, you will notice the direct steering and stiff setup straight away. Flooring the accelerator down the straight pushes you back hard into the seat, while the massive carbon brakes pull the car down to speed almost instantly for the turns. You will experience the physical effort needed to hold the car through high-speed bends before completing your stint and bringing the car back into the pit lane.
